Welcome

Following is a copy of a general store ledger from Urbanna, Virginia with entries dating from 1857 to 1865. The location of the general store and identity of the owner are unknown at this time.

The period covered by the ledger includes both the pre and post Civil War era and includes the names of customers trading at the store which likely included most families living in the area.

Also included are notes of apparent violations of Jim Crow laws by others "unlawfully trading with negroes" just after the end of the Civil War.

All pages, including those that are blank, have been scanned so the document is complete. The original document has been donated to the Library of Virginia.
